Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about VisaMate, Australian student visas, and our tools

About VisaMate

Q:What is VisaMate?

A: VisaMate is a comprehensive platform that helps international students navigate the entire Australian student visa journey - from researching universities to lodging your visa application. We provide tools, guides, and templates that traditionally would require hiring an expensive migration agent. Our platform includes university research database, Statement of Purpose builder, document checklists, application trackers, and form-filling assistance.

Q:Is VisaMate a registered migration agent?

A: No. VisaMate is NOT a registered migration agent and we do NOT provide migration advice. We are a self-service platform that provides tools, templates, and general information to help you prepare your own visa application. We don't represent you before the Department of Home Affairs, and all decisions regarding your application are your responsibility. For professional migration advice, please consult a MARA-registered agent at www.mara.gov.au.

Q:How is VisaMate different from using a migration agent?

A: Migration agents typically charge $2,000-$5,000 for services like writing your SOP, filling forms, and advising on your application. VisaMate gives you the same tools and templates to complete your application yourself, completely free. The key difference: we empower YOU to handle your application rather than doing it for you. This DIY approach works great for straightforward applications. However, if you have complex circumstances (visa refusals, health issues, character concerns), we recommend consulting a registered migration agent at mara.gov.au

Q:Who should use VisaMate?

A: VisaMate is perfect for:
  • International students applying for Australian Student Visa (subclass 500)
  • Students with straightforward applications (no visa refusals or complex history)
  • Budget-conscious students who want to save on agent fees
  • Organized individuals comfortable following step-by-step guides
  • Anyone researching Australian universities and courses

Visa Application Process

Q:Can VisaMate guarantee my visa will be approved?

A: No. Nobody can guarantee visa approval - not VisaMate, not migration agents, not anyone. Visa decisions are made solely by the Australian Department of Home Affairs based on their assessment criteria. What we CAN do is help you prepare a complete, accurate, and well-organized application that meets all requirements, which significantly improves your chances of success.

Q:How long does the Student Visa 500 process take?

A: Processing times vary, but typical timelines are:
  • 75% of applications: Processed within 29 days
  • 90% of applications: Processed within 4 months
  • Complex cases: Can take 6+ months

Check current processing times at Department of Home Affairs website. We recommend applying at least 2-3 months before your course starts.

Q:What documents do I need for my student visa application?

A: Our Document Checklist tool covers all 37 documents you might need, including:
  • Essential: Passport, CoE, OSHC, GTE statement, financial evidence, English test results
  • Academic: Transcripts, degree certificates, academic CV
  • Additional: Police clearance, health examination, passport photos

Requirements vary based on your country and circumstances. Always verify with official sources.

Q:Do I need a CoE before applying for my visa?

A: Yes. You must have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from an Australian educational institution before you can apply for a Student Visa 500. The CoE number is a required field in Form 157A. You get the CoE after:
  1. Receiving an unconditional offer from your university
  2. Accepting the offer
  3. Paying your tuition deposit
  4. Purchasing OSHC (health insurance)

Check our University Application Guide for the complete process.

Q:What is GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) and how important is it?

A: GTE is a statement explaining why you genuinely want to study in Australia and proving you intend to return home after your studies. It's critically important - a weak GTE is one of the most common reasons for visa refusal. Your GTE should address:
  • Why you chose this specific course and university
  • How it relates to your previous studies and career goals
  • Your ties to your home country (family, property, job prospects)
  • Your financial capacity
  • Why Australia over other countries

Our SOP Builder guides you through writing a strong GTE statement.

SOP Builder

Q:What is a Statement of Purpose (SOP)?

A: A Statement of Purpose (SOP) is a detailed essay explaining your academic background, career goals, reasons for choosing your course and university, and how studying in Australia fits your future plans. It's required for university applications and forms a key part of your GTE statement for visa applications. A well-written SOP can make the difference between acceptance and rejection.

Q:How does the SOP Builder work?

A: Our SOP Builder uses a simple 5-step wizard:
  1. Personal Information: Your background and nationality
  2. Academic Background: Education history and achievements
  3. Course & University: What you want to study and why
  4. Career Goals: Your future plans and how this course helps
  5. Financial & Personal: Funding sources and ties to home country

Answer 16 guided questions, preview your SOP, and download it as a professionally formatted Word or PDF document. No writing experience needed - we structure everything for you!

Q:Can I edit the SOP after downloading?

A: Absolutely! We strongly encourage it. The SOP Builder creates a solid foundation with proper structure, but you should:
  • Personalize the language to sound like you
  • Add specific examples and details
  • Adjust for specific university requirements
  • Have someone proofread for grammar and clarity

The Word format download is specifically designed to be easily editable in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or any word processor.

Q:How much would a migration agent charge to write my SOP?

A: Professional SOP writing services: Migration agents and education consultants typically charge $500-$2,000 for Statement of Purpose writing. Premium services can charge up to $5,000 for complete application packages.

Our SOP Builder is completely free and helps you create your own professional SOP with guided questions and templates. You maintain full control over your narrative while getting the structure and guidance you need.

Universities Database

Q:How many universities are in your database?

A: We have 43 Australian universities and 7 major TAFEs with comprehensive information including:
  • CRICOS codes (required for visa application)
  • Tuition fee ranges for international students
  • Student numbers and international student percentages
  • Available fields of study
  • World and Australia rankings
  • Key facts and specializations
  • Official website links

This includes all Group of Eight universities, regional universities, and vocational institutions.

Q:Can you recommend which university I should choose?

A: No. We don't make recommendations - this is intentional for legal reasons (we're not education consultants). Instead, we provide ALL the information you need to make an informed decision yourself:
  • Filter by location, budget, and field of study
  • Compare tuition costs and rankings
  • Read about each university's strengths
  • Check international student support

The decision should be based on YOUR priorities: location preference, budget, course offerings, career goals, and personal circumstances.

Q:Is the university information up to date?

A: We update our university database regularly, but tuition fees and course offerings can change. We provide official website links for each university so you can verify current information directly. Always check:
  • Current tuition fees on the university's international student page
  • Specific course requirements from the university's course finder
  • Application deadlines for your intended intake
  • English language requirements for your chosen course

Never rely solely on third-party information - always verify with official sources.

Forms & Technical

Q:Does VisaMate submit my visa application to the government?

A: No. VisaMate helps you prepare and organize your visa application, but YOU must submit it yourself through the official Department of Home Affairs website using ImmiAccount. We provide:
  • Form 157A pre-filling to organize your information
  • Document checklist to ensure nothing is missing
  • Guides explaining each step of the process
  • Links to official government forms and submission portals

This approach ensures you maintain full control and compliance with government requirements.

Q:Where is my data stored?

A: Currently, all your data is stored locally in your browser using localStorage. This means:
  • ✅ Your data never leaves your device (maximum privacy)
  • ✅ No server storage or third-party access
  • ⚠️ Clearing browser cache will delete your data
  • ⚠️ Data doesn't sync across different devices/browsers

Important: Always download your SOP and important documents as backup. Don't rely solely on browser storage.

Q:Is my personal information secure?

A: Yes. Since your data is stored locally in your browser (not on our servers), it's as secure as your device. We use HTTPS encryption for all communications, and we never transmit sensitive personal information to external servers. When you download documents (SOP, forms), they're generated client-side in your browser.

That said, always practice good security hygiene:

  • Use a secure, private device
  • Don't use public computers for sensitive applications
  • Keep your device and browser updated
  • Download and store important documents securely

Q:Which browsers does VisaMate support?

A: VisaMate works best on modern browsers:
  • Recommended: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari (latest versions)
  • Supported: Firefox, Brave, Opera (latest versions)
  • Mobile: Safari (iOS), Chrome (Android)

We recommend using the latest version of your browser for the best experience and security. Internet Explorer is not supported.

Q:Can I use VisaMate on my phone or tablet?

A: Yes! VisaMate is fully responsive and works on all devices. However, for the best experience, especially when:
  • Filling out lengthy forms (Form 157A has 82 fields)
  • Uploading and organizing multiple documents
  • Editing downloaded documents

We recommend using a desktop or laptop computer. You can use your phone/tablet for research (browsing universities, reading guides) and quick tasks (checking application tracker).

Timeline & Process

Q:How long before my course starts should I begin the application process?

A: We recommend this timeline:
  • 6-8 months before: Research universities, prepare documents, take English tests
  • 4-6 months before: Apply to universities
  • 2-4 months before: Receive offers, pay deposits, get CoE
  • 6-8 weeks before: Lodge visa application
  • 2-4 weeks before: Book flights, arrange accommodation (after visa approval)

Starting early reduces stress and gives you buffer time for unexpected delays. Check our University Application Guide for detailed timeline breakdown.

Q:Can I apply to multiple universities at once?

A: Yes, and you should! Most students apply to 3-5 universities to increase chances of acceptance and have options. Our Application Tracker tool helps you manage multiple applications in one place. Track status, deadlines, application fees, and notes for each university. Just remember:
  • Each application requires a separate fee ($50-$150 AUD)
  • You'll need to tailor your SOP for each university
  • You can only accept one offer for your visa application

Q:What happens after I receive my CoE?

A: After receiving your CoE, follow these steps:
  1. Immediately: Save your CoE safely - you'll need the CoE number for visa application
  2. Within 1 week: Confirm your OSHC (health insurance) is active
  3. Lodge visa: Apply for Student Visa 500 with Form 157A (use our form tool)
  4. Wait for decision: Check ImmiAccount regularly for updates or requests
  5. After visa grant: Book flights, arrange accommodation, inform university of arrival date

Check our Student Visa 500 Guide for complete details on each step.

Q:Can you review my SOP or visa application?

A: No. We don't offer document review or case-specific advice as this would require us to be registered migration agents. However, you can:
  • Use our built-in SOP preview to check structure and completeness
  • Ask friends, teachers, or mentors to review your documents
  • Hire a professional editor for language/grammar checking
  • Consult a registered migration agent for case-specific advice

Our tools guide you in creating properly structured documents, but final content is your responsibility.

Q:What if immigration policies change?

A: Australian immigration policies do change, sometimes with short notice. We make reasonable efforts to keep our information current, but:
  • Always verify critical information with official government sources
  • Check regularly at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au
  • Subscribe to Department of Home Affairs updates
  • Join communities like r/australianvisa for real-time updates

We are not responsible for policy changes. You are responsible for ensuring your application meets current requirements.

Common Issues

Q:I lost my data after clearing my browser. Can you recover it?

A: Unfortunately, no. Since all data is stored locally in your browser (for privacy and security), we have no way to recover it if you clear your browser cache or data. This is why we strongly recommend:
  • Download your SOP immediately after creating it
  • Export/save your application tracker data regularly
  • Keep backups of important documents elsewhere
  • Complete forms in one session when possible

Consider this a feature, not a bug - your sensitive data never touches our servers!

Q:The download button isn't working. What should I do?

A: If downloads aren't working:
  1. Check browser: Use Chrome, Edge, or Safari (latest version)
  2. Disable pop-up blocker: Allow pop-ups for getvisamate.com
  3. Check downloads folder: File might have downloaded to default location
  4. Clear cache: Try clearing browser cache and reloading page (⚠️ this will delete saved data)
  5. Try incognito/private mode: This helps identify extension conflicts
  6. Different browser: Test with a different browser

If issues persist, contact getvisamate@gmail.com with your browser name and version.
